Lower School
In the Lower School, we pick up where the primary school leaves off, benefiting from the excellent fundamentals put in place in the younger grades. In the academic sphere, we begin to teach and encourage more independence and sense of responsibility for students’ own learning. Homework increases, and as students get to the 4th and 5th grades, more long range assignments are assigned in which planning and budgeting time are important. Higher order thinking skills come into play, so that students are asked to take information they’ve learned and to then use that information to draw their own conclusions and form their own opinions. We also like to foster a sense of responsibility and leadership in the school community. Students undertake school duties such as running Meadowbrook’s recycling program, working and playing with the younger children in the school through our “buddy” program, and representing Meadowbrook on the playing field with their first inter-scholastic games. We like to see our students leave the Lower School with a love of learning and with the sense that they are equipped to learn well, that they have the inner resources to move on and succeed. We also like to see them develop self-confidence. We hope that we have helped them to become self-possessed and thoughtful people who will contribute in a positive and manner wherever they go.
