Computer

All lower school students participate in weekly technology and computer courses. In Grades Three and Four, students develop and hone their word processing skills using a self-guided typing tutorial program. In addition, each Lower School grade has an additional computer skills and programming class.

Grade Three

Lessons taught are integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. The software program Logo is used as an introductory programming language which emphasizes both logic and geometry skills. Classes are related to geometry math lessons, focusing on shapes, angles and polygons. Students are also introduced to Microsoft PowerPoint, by creating a slide related to their social studies research topic. Students also hone their word processing skills through a self-guided typing tutorial program in which they are taught proper hand positioning, and learn to use the correct fingers for each key on the keyboard. The program constantly assesses and records individual progress, so that each child's experience is tailored to meet his or her needs.

Grade Four

The Fourth Grade computer curriculum offers lessons in Logo, an object oriented programming language, Microsoft Power Point, and Microsoft Word. Skills are taught in class and the students use this knowledge to complete projects across the curriculum. The Internet is used to conduct research. Internet safety is discussed and students are encouraged to evaluate the websites they use for reliability of content. In additon, students complete their second year of the self-guided typing program, which provides lessons and games for learing and practicing proper hand position and keyboard navigation.

Grade Five

The grade five computer curriculum is problem-solving based. The year begins with an extension of Logo during which students are encouraged to problem solve as they reinforce their understanding of geometric principles. The connection with abstract thinking is made through the use of the variable and setXY along with multiple levels of procedures. The focus during winter term is on the development of a travel guide to anywhere in the world using the procedures found in PowerPoint and Word. The culminating project results in the design of a castle and a presentation using all of the acquired skills in conjunction with our unit on the Middle Ages.
