Students in Grades Three and Four will continue to receive instruction in the Spanish Language. In Grade Five Students are given the option to choose their language of study: Spanish, French, or Latin.

Grades Three and Four (Spanish)

Students primarily will continue to learn to talk about themselves and their immediate world. Themes will be tied to social studies, science, art and music where appropriate. Themes include the following:

  • Introduction to Spanish
  • Numbers, colors, shapes
  • Days, seasons, weather
  • All about me: faces and body
  • My family
  • My house
  • Clothing
  • Feelings
  • My community

Grade Five (Latin)

The Grade Five Latin course provides an introduction to the Latin language.  Conversational terms, Roman mythology, religion, and history, and beginning grammatical concepts are explored.  Students also begin translating passages appropriate to their ability.  In addition to topics relevant to Latin and ancient history, there is also an emphasis on English derivatives and improvement of students’ working vocabulary.

Grade Five (French)

Fifth grade French students continue to expand their knowledge of conversational and written French from grades four and five. Their vocabulary is expanded, and grammar points such as possessive adjectives, interrogative words and regular and irregular verbs form the introduction to more formal grammar study.

Grade Five (Spanish)

The fifth grade Spanish class is a course that stresses listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students gain a solid basic grammar base on which to build in future years of study. Additionally, the many-faceted aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures, a vital part of the entire Spanish program, are introduced.
