Languages
All Middle School students take a classical or modern language. 6th graders either continue their studies from Grade Five or begin study of French, Spanish or Latin. Placement for a new 7th grader may require some summer work depending on the student's prior language training. The goal of the Modern Language Department is to help young people develop proficiency in another language as well as a true appreciation of other cultures. Studying another language fosters such sensitivity, while also enabling students to gain greater understanding of their native language and traditions. To achieve this goal students focus on all four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Every effort is made to immerse the students and use the target language as much as possible. Textbooks, tapes, CD-ROMS, videocassettes, workbooks and readers help accomplish these aims.
