Computer
Formal computer classes begin in First Grade at Meadowbrook. Initially, students are taught the basic functions of the school's computing and networking world, like how to log on to the school server with their unique user name and how to navigate the desktop using the mouse and keyboard. These tasks are reinforced each week as first graders develop word processing skills, working in Microsoft Word to create two books of nursery rhymes. Computer classes are taught in groups of twelve, so each child has access to his or her own computer. In second grade , students learn to employ basic programming commands in Terrapin Logo, to create specific shapes and drawings. Students must carefully follow directions and reference previous skills, while also experimenting with how to create new shapes. In conjunction with learning new computer skills and functions, students practice problem-solving and utilize their logical, mathematical skills and develop better spatial reasoning capabilities.
