Language Arts
The study of language arts and the pursuit of reading fluency in the Primary School is a vital part of Meadowbrook's academic program. Junior Kindergarten Through experiences with books on tape, reading readiness workbooks, fiction and nonfiction picture books, and other methods, the students begin to develop valuable language arts skills. The children are exposed to concepts of matching, discriminating letters and numbers, and decoding simple words. Auditory skills of rhyming and letter sounds are developed. Senior Kindergarten The senior kindergarten language arts program consists of reading readiness skills, writing, listening and speaking. The students discover how to decode and encode simple words and phrases in the books and around the classroom. Students learn to write on lined paper with proper letter formation. Students are given opportunities to write independently in their journals on teacher-directed topics. Listening skills are developed throughout the year as students are taught to follow multi-step directions.
Grade One Grade One reading time is devoted to building a foundation of reading skills and strategies that provide the students with the keys to unlock meaning from the text with proficiency, accuracy and understanding. The students apply and practice their new skills during small reading groups, paired reading buddies, active learning games and large group lessons. Writing in Grade One is closely linked to reading comprehension. Students learn to recognize the setting, major and minor characters, the problem, goal, episodes and resolution of the stories shared in class. Children are encouraged to use proper punctuation, capitals and spelling approximations on a consistent basis. Grade Two The Grade Two reading program is based on the guided reading principles of Fountas and Pinnell. Reading instruction is constructed in three parts: whole group instruction, reading groups and reading conferences. Grade Two students write stories, poems, journal entries, research reports, and letters. Students learn to incorporate spelling and writing mechanics into their works. The Rebecca Sitton Spelling Program is used to improve students’ spelling in their writing. The program challenges students by holding them to consistently high standards of spelling in all of their written work.
