Mathematics

Junior Kindergarten
Mathematics is taught using a wide variety of manipulatives, such as digi-blocks, Unifix cubes, pegboards, pattern blocks, and geoboards. We explore concepts of patterns, sets, numbers, shapes, and simple computation. Children engage in many counting experiences throughout the day.

Senior Kindergarten
The manipulative math program exposes the students to an array of experiences. The emphasis of the first part of the year is counting, with the focus on the numbers zero to one hundred. The students are given experience counting by ones, twos, fives and tens. Daily counting activities are presented to give everyone the opportunity to practice and master counting skills.

Digi-blocks assist the students in counting and grouping objects into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. These materials are a concrete and visual representation of the patterning of our base ten number system. In addition, the students prepare and read bar graphs, and participate in the popular weekly estimation jar activity.

Grade One
Students are taught math in both large and small groups. Concepts covered include, patterns, number sense, addition and subtraction, graphs, calendar skills, place value, measurement, time, money, word problems, multiplication, division and fractions.  Students use both manipulatives and paper and pencil tasks to exhibit their knowledge of the concepts taught to them.

Grade Two
The goal of the Grade Two math curriculum is to establish a solid foundation on which to build mathematical concepts. This involves providing opportunities for children to explore a variety of manipulative materials and paper and pencil tasks. Concepts covered include:

  • Problem solving
  • Place value
  • Money
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and division
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Fractions
