Social Studies
The Primary School Social Studies Program is built around an outwardly progressive model, beginning with a study of self and expanding through school and local community up through a global perspective.
Junior Kindergarten The focus of the Junior Kindergarten's social studies program is community. Students study their own classroom, the local community, and Native American culture. In addition, Open Circle is a significant part of the social studies curriculum.
Senior Kindergarten The Senior Kindergarten's social studies emphasis is on family. Information is shared through pictures and reading about different family structures. Discussions and projects center around each individual child and his/her immediate and extended family. Open Circle is also a part of the social studies curriculum.
Grade One The Grade One social studies program is organized around the theme of community. Students are taught that they are members of several communities at the same time: family, neighborhood, school, city/town, state, country and continent. The units emphasize the importance of the children's membership in and responsibility to each of those communities. Through literature, music, guest speakers, dance and participating in an all-school performance students experience firsthand the impact of individuals within a group.
Grade Two The goal of the Grade Two social studies program is for students to develop a better understanding of people and places. Attention is focused on the three basic needs of life: food, shelter and clothing, and how geographic features and climates affect life in a community. Map skills are also developed, as students learn about North America and Hawaii through the study of native cultures.
