Pottery
Meadowbrook's commitment to excellence in the arts is certainly reflected in our Art facilities. The Lower School pottery studio comes equipped with a multitude of instruments and tools used in the sculpting process, and wide flat tables to provide ample space for work, drying and storage. Pottery begins in the Primary School and is taken by each student every year with class sizes of twelve maximum. Initially, pottery consists of learning to mold and shape clay into recognizable objects, but quickly escalates into a medium for kids to both express themselves while imitating art from cultures they are studying.
Pottery class is designed to encourage the students to learn about the creative use of clay through a number of imaginative projects. Beginning in the primary school, students experiment with texture using stamps, carving tools and everyday objects. In addition, they learn about some of the basic hand-building techniques. Students are taught pinch, slab and coil methods of clay construction.
Students in the Lower School begin to take on more challenging projects. They are encouraged to develop original ideas and to execute their ideas in an independent, thorough and aesthetically pleasing manner.
