Visual Arts

The Primary/Lower School art studio is the perfect place for young minds and hands to sketch, paint, sculpt, glue and color their way to self-expression: vaulted ceilings, and expansive workspaces overlooking the Meadowbrook Pond. With cabinets, shelves, and walls stocked full of materials of every shape, size, hue, and medium, children can truly create anything within the realm of imagination. Art instruction provides kids with the tools to bring their creations to life. This begins with learning skills like how to mix colors and cut evenly and evolves into the creation of three-dimensional paper-mache masks and more.

The art curriculum begins in Junior Kindergarten with a study of primary colors and basic skills like cutting shapes, and experimenting with texture and patterns. As students progress through the Primary School art program, they continue to explore color, composition, style and observation, working in both two- and three-dimensional forms. Students are increasingly encouraged to expand upon their own imaginations and to begin to discover artistic independence. In the Lower School, the art curriculum begins to more closely mirror other aspects of academic coursework. Students use art as a way to explore and understand culture, often creating their own projects based on their studies of society, science, literature, and drama.
