Student Mentoring

Meadowbrook takes very seriously the notion of community; it is not enough for us all to simply exist in the same building. While most of student's work is done within their respective grades, time is still set aside each week for older students to spend academic time with their younger buddies. For example, the fifth grade is paired up with the Senior Kindergarten, and every Friday morning, each student in Grade Five will stop in Senior K to pick up a younger student to escort to the weekly all-school meeting. The older students are responsible for making introductions, ushering their buddy to the assembly, and sitting with that kindergartener throughout the meeting. Monthly, in lieu of all-school meetings, buddy classes like Grade Eight and Grade Two will assemble in a community space to read books or create art projects in pairs or small groups. This allows older Meadowbrook students practice in role modeling, and the little ones are always so thrilled to later run into their buddies in the hallway or to see them on the playing fields. As younger students grow to become older students, their positive experiences within the buddy system translate into honest efforts to extend their hands to the younger grades whenever they can. This incredible sense of community can be felt instantly when you see Meadowbrook students of all ages interacting.
