Junior kindergarten science lessons take place outside in Wonderwood, Meadowbrook's outdoor classroom, each week. Each child has the opportunity to take part in science, mindfulness, and motor skill practice as they learn about weather, seasons, and native plants and animals. 

Language Arts
The junior kindergarten language arts program introduces students to all letter names, sounds, and formations. Students will also participate in phonemic awareness lessons and systematic phonics instruction when students are ready. Lessons focus on supporting students' emergent reading and writing skills while encouraging those who are ready to pursue more independent literacy activities.

Social Studies
This course emphasizes respect, appreciation, and cooperation. Through discussions, readings, visitors, and hands-on activities, children learn about their surroundings and community. Junior kindergarten technology class builds iPad skills, mousing on computers, and includes non-screen activities like LEGO, robotics, and CAD through Kindersite’s block builder. Meeting once per week for 30 minutes, the course offers a comprehensive introduction to technology.

Spanish
This introductory Spanish course engages junior kindergarten students with language learning through movement, gestures, repetition, and everyday objects. Fun and practical activities like songs, games, and projects expose students to Spanish, encouraging participation and engagement.

Library
In Jr. K., library class is designed to foster our youngest students' love of reading and books by exploring a wide range of diverse children’s literature. We explore both fiction and nonfiction, featuring different voices and perspectives, helping students build empathy and develop a better understanding of themselves, each other, and the world around them. Each week, we build community, make connections, ask questions, and celebrate the written (and illustrated) word.

Social Emotional Learning
It is our goal to build a community where children feel safe, cared for and engaged in learning. Social emotional learning in junior kindergarten particularly focuses on supporting children’s ability to recognize and manage emotions, develop empathy, positive relationships, and problem solving. Students who can navigate the social and emotional components of their day are then able to fully participate in academic learning. Cultivating resilience in junior kindergarten is of the utmost importance as a resilient child can take on any challenge in life.

Pottery
Junior kindergarten students explore clay through observation and basic skill-building. The course offers experiences in molding, rolling, texturing, and glazing. Weekly lessons encourage imaginative thought, usually taking a minimum of two weeks to complete a project, with one thirty-minute session each week.

Music
Jr. K. music develops musicianship, singing, and rhythm skills in the youngest learners. Through songs, movement, games, and instruments, students learn about steady beat, tempo, pitch, dynamics, classroom instruments, and creativity. The curriculum includes preparing songs for presentations in collaboration with Sr-K.

2D Art
Junior kindergarten art focuses on establishing basic skills and principles of art. The structured classes allow students to follow instructions and develop projects. With an emphasis on accomplishment and satisfaction, students are guided through each stage of their art creations.

Woodworking
Woodworking class introduces junior kindergarten students to the building process and basic hand tools. Safety and skill-building are emphasized through guided projects. The class fosters a sense of accomplishment and understanding of the tools used in woodworking.

Physical Education
This curriculum fosters a love for physical activity while emphasizing safety, cooperation, and social development. It provides the foundation for lifelong health and fitness, including basic skills for team sports, through various formats that encourage physical and social skill growth

Math
Senior kindergarten math employs manipulatives to teach number sense, shapes, fractions, and basic arithmetic. Emphasis lies on conceptual understanding rather than algorithm proficiency. The scope and sequence is based on book 1B of the Primary Mathematics texts which utilize the Singapore Math approach for content mastery. Students are guided from the concrete phase using manipulatives, to the pictorial phase where they draw pictures of the manipulatives, and then finally to the abstract phase using algorithms and workbook pages for practice. All instruction and practice is tailored to the students’ individual needs.

Science
Senior kindergarten science introduces concepts like astronomy, physics, and biology. Students engage in hands-on experiences, raising animals and planting gardens, making complex scientific principles tangible and exciting. Senior kindergarten science lessons take place in Meadowbrook's outdoor classroom, Wonderwood. Outdoor learning provides the opportunity for students to investigate the world around them and apply concepts to their home environment. 

Language Arts: Reading
The senior kindergarten reading program places students into performance-based reading groups to ensure they are developing the necessary foundational reading skills. Sessions focus on phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, decoding and encoding, fluency (accuracy, speed, prosody), vocabulary development, and reading comprehension. Five 35-minute weekly sessions aim to instill a lifelong passion for reading.

Students read books at an appropriate instructional level and experience a variety of genres within their small group. Students will complete both long and short-format writing about literature and they will practice the skills of brainstorming, organizing, summarizing, elaborating, editing, and revising.

The third-grade social studies curriculum explores journeys, migration, and identity. Using tools from the RULER program, students examine social justice, immigration, and colonialism, engaging in active, project-based learning. 4th grade students continue to build their technology skills to find, assess, use, and share information effectively and responsibly. Projects build on classroom curriculum, growing increasingly complex and exploring a range of media, including writing, videos, map-making, and more.

Spanish
Fourth graders meet twice per week to develop their Spanish skills. The class includes a review of basics and the introduction of new material, with a focus on answering questions in complete sentences. This is the first year students receive formal assessments and grades in Spanish.

Woodworking

Choral/General Music
4th grade music enhances students' music reading and notation skills, incorporating pitches on Bass clef as well as compound meters. Students advance in singing, rhythm, and composition, and start learning about harmony (Chords). They prepare for more challenging performances which include singing and playing Orff unpitched percussion instruments.

2D Art
Fourth graders rotate through three visual arts, exploring creativity and mastering skills. They work independently on projects with loose parameters, engaging in problem-solving and idea development. Emphasis is placed on practice and sketchbooks for drafts. The class meets twice a week, and though the number of projects decreases, the difficulty increases.

Band
Focused on elements of music, theory, and performance, fourth graders explore pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, and various musical instruments. The class emphasizes tempo consistency, note values, rhythms, and proper form and technique. Activities include sight reading, note recognition, and ensemble playing. The class meets once a week for 55 minutes.

Pottery
This course encourages creativity, challenge, and craftsmanship in clay work. Fourth graders work with high independence on projects that follow general guidelines, creating unique and aesthetically pleasing work. Lessons include creating animal-inspired vessels, and the class meets twice per week, running for one third of the year.

Physical Education
Fourth graders engage in a range of physical activities like soccer, basketball, team building, cooperative games, and fitness. Activities foster social, emotional, and physical development, preparing students for interscholastic programs.

Fifth grade has four performance-based math sections. Three use the Dimensions Math curriculum with Singapore Math's approach, covering content with books 6A and 6B. Emphasis is on understanding math tools, problem-solving, algorithmic proficiency, and model drawing. This deepens comprehension and helps students discern effective learning strategies. The Honors Accelerated Math uses the ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING: PRE-ALGEBRA, prepping students for Algebra I. This approach minimizes basic practice, focusing on challenging problems that illuminate concept origins and limits, and employs formal algebraic language.

The Honors Accelerated Math program uses ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING: PRE-ALGEBRA, focusing on advanced problems to prepare students for Algebra I. 5th graders use their research and technology skills to develop a multi-genre capstone Passion Project, researching a topic, writing effectively, and creating visual objects to support their thesis. The final year of lower school Spanish, fifth grade aims to equip students with confidence in speaking, understanding vocabulary, and basic grammar. With a focus on customizing and conceptualizing, the class encourages students to develop their unique style. Classes meet twice a week for 50 minutes, running for one third of the year.

Physical Education
The fifth-grade physical education curriculum encourages a love for physical activity through various sports like soccer, flag football, basketball, and more. Team building and social development are key focuses. Inter-school soccer games prepare students for middle school programs, all aiming to promote physical, emotional, and social well-being.
